Aging is in your control.
Like all of you, when I open my socials it’s flooded with new ‘tips’ on skincare. From DIY to overpriced skincare products, how is a person supposed to choose what products and treatments are going to produce results? And how do you keep yourself from trying something that ultimately could disrupt your skin's progress?
Let me break down my approach on skincare that I’ve had for many years. You can’t just treat the skin topically. I’ll say it again - you cannot just treat the skin topically. Truth be told, even with a great skincare routine, if you’re not taking an active internal to external approach, your results will not be as great as they can be. What I am saying is that if you want to take full control of your skin and be in control of how you age, you have to create a routine from the inside out. A personalized routine will help with one of the number one concerns that we hear in the treatment room - aging.
As service providers, we spend hours and hours on our social media platforms to gain recognition for our work. These hours are spent to educate and ultimately ‘convince’ followers that they need ME! And you absolutely do. But truth be told, it’s when you realize that you’re in control of how you age that’ll you step into a totally new mindset.
How do I know that? It happened to me a few weeks ago.
You’ve seen a lot of my posts lately hyping up the Morpheus8 treatment by InMode. Morpheus8 has become one of the most requested medical spa services across the country and one of my personal favorite treatments to give and receive. As an InMode partner, we are given an account manager. During a business coaching session, our account manager, Lindsay, made the comment that we age how we want to. I stopped her and was like wait a minute.. repeat that. We age how we want to.
Pause.. Breathe.. Take that in.
You see, the aging process is inevitable. Anti-Aging really is a dying concept (or should be buried 6 ft under..maybe a little further) because our brains should not be wired to be “anti” aging. As you read this blog, you’re aging. Every second that passes by, the aging process is taking place. Can we disrupt the aging process, sure. Can we stop it, absolutely not. So go on a journey with me of graceful aging. THAT is something we all can do and the best part - you can start this at ANY age.
If I had a dollar for every person I’ve treated that during the consultation said to me “I wish I would have started this sooner”, I could be writing this on a tropical beach somewhere instead of steaming humid temps in Kansas.
I had a healthy conversation with a much loved client of mine just the other day as we discussed the aging process. I was explaining that we live in a time where some people in their 50’s, 60’s and maybe even 70’s are still working and switching careers. They could be up against the younger generations and having a youthful appearance is imperative.
Why would I say such a thing?
Surveys show that over 50% of companies say appearance has an influence in their hiring decisions. In the discussion with my client, I explained that we cannot take you back to your 20’s but we can return your skin back to its healthiest state. The goal is to create a healthy, radiating outer appearance. As a skin therapist, I strongly believe that it is okay to have your monthly facial, a little filler, maybe some botox, the best homecare products PLUS a little energy work as the cherry on top. You can and deserve to have it all! THIS is the way to graceful aging.
Another interesting experience I’ve had regarding the concept of aging is in my own practice. Throughout my years of hiring and training estheticians, it never fails to have a younger esthetician tell me they have a fear of working on women more mature than them because they are so much younger and don’t feel like women can trust them when it comes to the aging process. You see these younger service providers have an advantage that most didn’t have at their age. What is that - knowledge and education. As we’ve evolved over the years, science is only getting better, which means that gen z has more education than boomers, gen x and millennials had at their age. *lightbulb* goes off for these professionals and boom, a client following is quickly established.
The aging process is one that should be celebrated and nothing to be scared of. With our industry continuing to advance, we can preserve the integrity of the skin more than we used to in past years. So let me ask you - how are you choosing to age?
